Welcome to my Memoirs...
I am writing this open letter to you because I believe it is so important that we share our stories with one another. When you read my biographical sketch and learn of my journey overseas, I want you to remember I am just like any other young African American male within our community. For the young man or young woman who is reading this, you can make it too. Whatever you set your mind to you can accomplish; if you have discipline and faith. Don’t allow anybody to discredit or discount what your dreams tell you are possible. I grew up in a lower middle class African American community where teenagers were dropping out of school at alarming rates. It was projected during my graduating year that only 49.6 percent of young people would matriculate through high school. Teenagers around me were dying every day in imprudent, impulsive, and impetuous circumstances. I grew up with odds stacked against me and bad decisions could have easily sent me down the wrong path, but I made a conscious decision not to allow my conditions to dictate my destiny. I am no different than you are. To the parents and guardians of these young jewels, I made it this far because I had positive people supporting me and encouraging me to be the best I could be. Don’t give up on your neighbor’s children, continue to encourage them and support them like they were your own. I am a witness if we keep our youth and young adults lifted, God can do exceedingly, abundantly, and above all we can ever ask or think. I pray my story is a source of encouragement to your story and you will continue in the path God has for you!
